The Knights of the Sky Radio Amateur Club April 2 holds club minitest, and from April 2-12, 2023 activity days dedicated to the day of aviation and cosmonautics (April 12) and presents a diploma dedicated to Soviet cosmonaut I.Volk, Hero of the Soviet Union, Honored Test Pilot, Colonel of Aviation

Igor Petrovich Volk (April 12, 1937 – January 3, 2007) was born in Zmiev, Kharkov region in the family of a mechanical engineer and a nurse. In 1954 he graduated from High School № 5 in Kursk, at the same time he studied at the local flying club, making his first flight in April 1954 He showed special skills in complex tests of various aircraft on spinning and large angles of attack, inertial spinning, strength, aerodynamics and flight dynamics. He was one of the first to conduct research on aerial refueling of fighters In May 1976, within the framework of the Spiral aerospace program, leading test pilot I.P. Volk conducted tests in the atmosphere of a subsonic analog of an orbital plane, the MiG-105.11, a prototype of the Soviet reusable space fighter From April 1979 to December 1980 he underwent training in the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center and in August 1981 headed the industry group of test pilots of the USSR Ministry of Aviation Industry

In preparation for the program “Energia-Buran” he went into space from July 17-29, 1984 as a cosmonaut-researcher. He took off in Soyuz T-12 spacecraft, worked at Salyut-7 orbital complex, returned to Earth in Soyuz T-11 after 11 days and 19 hours. 14 м. 36 s.

The main task of Volk’s flight in space was to evaluate the pilot’s capabilities after being in zero gravity conditions. Immediately after landing Igor Volk flew the helicopter, and then the Tu-154 and MiG-25 aircrafts on the “Buran” glide path, which confirmed the cosmonaut’s ability to pilot Buran after work in orbit

In 1984-1987 he was the commander of cosmonaut-test team of the Buran spacecraft analogue

The full-size space analogue of the Buran, designated BTS-002GLI (GLI – Horizontal Flight Test), was manufactured for flight testing in the Earth’s atmosphere and had four turbojet engines in its tail section, which allowed it to take off from a conventional airfield

On November 10, 1985, it made its first atmospheric flight. During tests to test the control and automatic landing systems and to train test pilots before flights into space, the Buran made five taxiing flights and thirteen flights

The Buran`s space flight took place on November 15, 1988. The Energia rocket took the spacecraft into earth orbit, within 205 minutes of its flight it made two reaches around the Earth, after which it landed automatically at the Yubileyny airfield of the Baikonur Cosmodrome

In 1990, work on the Energia-Buran program was suspended and finally shut down on May 25, 1993

I.P. Volk remained in the cosmonaut corps until 1995. In 1995-1997 he was head of LIC, at the same time being deputy head of LII. In 1997-2002. – deputy Head of LII named after M.M. Gromov

I.P. Volk until 1995 remained in the cosmonaut corps

He made only one, very short flight into space. But beneath the muted glory of the once-flying cosmonaut is the figure of one of the greatest test pilots of the twentieth century, standing on a par with such a legendary figure as Valery Chkalov. In scale. In talent. And in character
